TURMERIC FARMER, Satara, Maharashtra

Dr. Salunkhe has been a small-scale organic farmer for 13 years in Satara District. He is an Art of Living teacher, who conducts organic farming, yoga and meditation courses. In his journey as a farmer, he started a Participatory Guarantee Scheme (PGS) for an organic farmer group of 80 small-scale producers. The primary focus of farming is in turmeric and he grows the Salem & Waygaon variety. The turmeric harvested is of premium quality and usually left in the ground for a long time, to raise the level of curcumin content in the turmeric. He is very well respected in his village and empowers his farmers to turn organic and lead a healthy,stress-free and sustainable lifestyle. Dr. Salunkhe says, “We strive to build self-sufficiency across the value chain for farm produce, intervening with solutions on climate resilient agriculture, post-harvest technology, quality control, and create markets for value-added products. We envision to safeguard small-scale farmer livelihoods through diversification and increase in family incomes.”
